Arizona Parents Want School Choice and Support Charter Schools. Here’s Proof

By Jake Logan and Nina Rees

Arizona classes are back in session.

For parents of the more than 1.1 million Arizona students enrolled in a public school, it’s hard to imagine that less than a generation ago, the decision about where your child would attend school was made for you, not by you.

Indeed, many of us are old enough to remember a time when school assignment was dictated not by a student’s needs, but by the neighborhood in which his or her parents could afford to live.

In Arizona, that was the reality until 1994 when Arizona enacted charter school legislation. Together with the adoption of district open enrollment, the statutory changes affirmed a simple principle: Parents know best when it comes to picking the right school for their child.

Chandler Woman Goes from Mom to Charter School Administrator

By Jamar Younger

When Annie Gilbert of Chandler sought out a school for her four sons, she chose Ball Charter Schools, a K-8 public charter school network with campuses in Chandler, Gilbert and North Phoenix. Gilbert was drawn to the network’s reputation for promoting heavy parent involvement, as well as its core mission of meeting the needs of individual students.

However, it wasn’t enough to just volunteer at the school as a parent. Gilbert eventually began working part-time for the network as its business manager before rising to a full-time position as senior director of finance and operations.

After 22 years as a charter school parent and administrator, Gilbert has gained an intimate knowledge of daily charter operations, as she oversees everything from finances, procurement and purchasing processes, to academic reporting and analysis.

Why 2017 is a Critical Year for School Choice

Association President and CEO Eileen Sigmund Highlights Successes, Upcoming Challenges Facing Charter Schools in Arizona Capitol Times Op-ed

This was originally published in the Arizona Capitol Times:

The coming year will be a critical time for the school choice movement in Arizona and nationally.

Rapid enrollment growth over the past 20 years has demonstrated the popularity of public charter schools when parents are given an option in their children’s education. In Arizona, 180,000 students now attend one of 547 charter schools across the state. Since 2007-08, charter enrollment nationally has more than doubled and now stands at nearly 3 million.

Even more impressive: Consider that another 1 million students are on waiting lists nationwide to attend a public charter school. Clearly, these schools are meeting a critical demand of American families.
